Emergency Fund Calculator
Turn your monthly expenses into a real 3-month and 6-month savings target, and see how long it'll take to get there.
How this calculator works
An emergency fund is cash set aside for the essentials (not every expense, just the ones that don't stop if your income does: housing, food, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments) so a job loss, medical bill, or car repair doesn't force you into debt. "3 to 6 months" is the common rule of thumb for how big that fund should be, so this calculator takes your monthly essential expenses and multiplies by 3 and by 6 to show both targets in real dollars. Then it does simple division: (target minus what you've already saved) divided by how much you can save per month, rounded up to a whole month, so the number you see is always enough to fully reach the target.
Worked example
$3,000 a month in essential expenses means a 3-month target of $9,000 and a 6-month target of $18,000. Starting with $1,000 already saved and adding $300 a month, you'd reach the 3-month target in about 27 months and the 6-month target in about 57 months. Saving more per month shortens both numbers directly; saving nothing per month means neither target has a finish line until you start.
Frequently asked questions
Why 3 to 6 months and not some other number?
It's a widely used rule of thumb meant to cover a typical gap between losing income and finding a new source of it, not a fixed rule. Some people feel more comfortable with less (if they have a very stable job) or more (if their income is variable or they support a family alone).
Should I count rent, but not things like streaming subscriptions?
Yes: use your essential, can't-easily-cut expenses (housing, food, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments, transportation to work), not your full discretionary budget. That keeps the target realistic for what you'd actually need to get by.
Where should I keep this money?
Most people keep an emergency fund somewhere safe and easy to access on short notice, like a savings account, rather than somewhere it could lose value right when they need it. This calculator doesn't model interest or investment growth; it's a pure savings-pace tool.
Assumptions & sources
- Targets are a simple multiple of the monthly essential expenses you enter (3x and 6x); no interest or investment growth is modeled on the saved amount.
- Months to reach a target are rounded up so the shown number always fully covers the target, never slightly short.
